Whazzz Up?!

Yes...I've been a blogger-slacker...But not a life-slacker...Here's some of what I've been up to...

Canning Freak: If I have it, I've canned it!! Home-grown tomatoes w/ home-grown basil, pear tomatoes with basil, fresh tomato salsa, fresh tomato salsa with jalapeno peppers, zucchini w/basil, and peaches....Wintertime will be SO NICE when I break these out!!

We've also been making veteran and military "thank you" stars for school...Isn't my dad handsome?!

I've been up to Heber Valley Camp, scoping out our campsite for next year for our Stake Girls Camp...

Still laughing at the BEST back-t0-school story...My youngest comes home with a huge smile...

And then he turns around...

here's a close-up...
I say, "So S....What happened to your shirt?""
s: "What?"
me: "What happened to your shirt?"
s: (looking at the back of his shirt) "Oh...I was trying to pet the dog..."
me: (my turn) "What?!"
s: "I was trying to pet the dog...but there was a fence..."
me: "Whose dog was it? What fence?"
s: "I got caught on the fence, when I tried to pet the dog..."

I STILL do not know whose dog it was, or how my son got hooked into that fence....but the pictures pretty much speak for themselves!

I have book club tomorrow with some dear friends...there are seven of us...each time a different person chooses the book, and hosts the evening...the author of the book is going to be there...I'm on page 13 of the book...I've had it for over a month...I just cannot get into it!! I'm trying to think of a way to stall, so that I arrive AFTER the author has gone ( I don't want to sit there and "act" like I enjoyed it...I'm not very good at that!) Perhaps I'll have a miracle tonight, and somehow read 300+ pages...?

Things have been tight around the homestead lately...But I'm lucky in that I have a "Gwen-mart" card....What?...You don't have a "Gwen-mart" card? They are delightful!! This is how they work...

You have an AWFUL week...we are talking a "no good, VERY bad" week! (TOO MANY details to tell...plus it just gets me all worked up and ugly...I had to get my Bishop to give me a blessing to aid in curbing my anger...I basically joined the Navy last week, with the language I was using!) You feel overwhelmed, angry, anxious, and have no food in the fridge...Step in, "Gwen-mart!" I got to go shopping in my sis' luxury pantry--we are talking a pantry as big as a small store!! Not only did she fill my fridge, she let me vent (swear!) and filled my calloused heart with some needed TLC.

Now you know the beauty that is "Gwen-mart!!"
(Yes---she IS as wonderful as she sounds!!)

I've been watching the debates...the bailout...the View...CNN...the Office...(the TRULY important one ; ) ) Obama or McCain? Another "monetary plan?" Elisabeth vs. Joy? Will Michael ever hook up with Holly? Such a plethora of issues!

But luckily, life still has its moments...This is how I found my son the other day...I wish life could always be like this...

Peace out!!

The memory still takes me back to that day...when time truly stood "still..."

My Salty Path from Martin's Cove to Rock Creek Hollow

Oh boy...This post is big for me...I want to do it justice...I want to try and convey my thoughts in a way that will express what I felt...

At Youth Conference this year, it was amazing how many kids who shared their testimony at its conclusion, started with the phrase..."I didn't want to go..." and then shared how the experience changed their lives...

That was me in regards to this trip.

It was the last week before school was to start. My eldest son needed to register for his classes for his first year of Junior High, and my other children all needed to meet their teachers, etc. at Back to School night...All of which are expertise areas of "Mom." The adversary was indeed working very hard on me...Giving me HUGE amounts of guilt ("You are a bad Mom--putting your calling ahead of your kids--"). It was awful. But thanks to my wonderful husband, who promised me that he would take care of "everything," I packed my bags, and got up at 5am the next morning...

(By the way--there is nothing funnier than 9 adults in a HUGE 10 passenger van...You learn A LOT about everyone!!)

We arrived at Martin's Cove that afternoon...

It was vivid, yet quiet and peaceful. It was overcast, with clouds threatening to dump their contents out upon us...but they never did, which made the paths gentle, and cool. As I began to walk along the 5 mile loop of the cove, I was nervous and anxious as I waited for some type of emotion to overtake me.

And I kept waiting...

And waiting...

As I wound around the last bend before the actual cove, I heard whispers from behind me. I looked back to see what the Stake President was saying...only to find that I was all alone...

I wept.
Ugly, shuddering, messy sobs that came from the deepest niches of my soul.

As we came to the top of the cove, there was an area to sit and overlook the site. I had to sit a few rows back from my group, until I felt I could compose myself...I then took my place by my fellow YW presidency, and began to listen to the cute missionary couple.

"A young couple fell in love on their journey to Salt Lake. So in love were they, that instead of getting married along the trail, which many did, they were vigilant in their desire to only be married under the sealing ordinances of God, through the prophet...So they had decided to postpone their marriage until reaching Salt Lake..."

"The young man was a help to many...always called upon to help those who had lost loved ones, stoke the lingering fires, bury those who had died, and provide whatever he was called upon to do..."

"When the group reached the cove to find shelter from the icy snow and frigid winds, the young man died from exposure...leaving behind the love of his life and their dream of eternal covenants..."

"It was widely known that the ground would be too frozen to allow for a proper burial, and thus the bodies were generally left to the elements...around the next bend in the cove...and in the pitch of the night, one could hear the howling and fighting of the wolves as they came upon the freshly laid bodies of those dear loved ones..."
"As the men came to take the young man to his final resting place, his dear love, removing the bright red shawl she had worn throughout her journey, wrapped him inside it's warmth, and told the men to please hang his body wrapped in this cover, from the tops of the trees, as to avoid the certain predators of the night..."

"As she left the cove, she looked back upon the bright red shawl, hanging in the trees..."

"Several months after arriving in Salt Lake, she inquired about her dearly departed, and if recent travelers had seen him amongst the trees...Quietly they told her that they only saw the red shawl, as it blew in the breeze..."

Sobbing...uncontrollably...with the ugly sounds that accompany it...

As we walked back with our cart, I was able to recover a bit, through casual conversation and taking in the imagery of my surroundings. Even the animals (and we saw and came close to so many deer, birds, rabbits, (snakes!) all seemed to know the reverent and sacred nature of their habitat, for it was silent, and sweet...

The next day we went to Sixth Crossing, which is one of the nine crossings made over the river in this area...We sat for two hours in the van to get to this next point...The pioneers walked...

We arrived and walked along the river paths...I took home rocks and pebbles from the paths for my children...Then the rain came and cut our visit short...After the rain seemed to clear, we headed for Rock Creek Hollow, where the second rescue happened...where thirteen died the night they arrived, with two more deaths by morning...Ages from small little children, to those my age and a little older...

In a fenced area, there is a monument laid over the circle grave where these individuals were buried...When President Hinckley instructed the position of this monument, they found in that place a child's bonnet, and an adult boot...The names of those who died are engraved on this monument, as well as a small grave beside it...Each person has a story...One child had a younger brother who had just walked up the hill known as Rocky Ridge, and told his older brother he could go no further...The older brother took his young sibling upon his back, and walked and tredged in the elements to Rock Creek Hollow, where he sat his brother down, and then laid down, and passed on...Another story of a girl who was 9 named Bodil Mortensen, who was sent to go get sagebrush to keep her family's fire going...She was found the next morning leaning against the wheel of their cart, with the sagebrush still clasped in her hands...We then went by the huge amphitheater where devotionals can be held, where there are two more fenced areas of unknown graves along the hill...There is a fence just beyond this area, which leads to a beautiful glen, along the river...As we entered this area, the Missionary couple told us the following story:

"A few weeks ago, a youth group came here for their Trek...Among them was a leader who had recently lost a young son. He and his son had been horse-back riding, and during that time, the father had asked his son to hold onto the reins of the horse while he attended to something...The young boy wrapped his hand in the leather strap as he waited...Something then spooked the horse, and all this father could do was watch as his son was dragged to his death..."

"This leader was among the group at the amphitheater, during a devotional happening at the time. As he looked over to the gate beyond this area, he saw a young girl...even making eye contact with her...When he later looked for her, she was gone...""He awoke the next morning, still wondering why he had seen this girl, and for what purpose. He went to the gated area, and knelt in prayer...She came to him as she had before...She said that she had been the same age as his son when she had died...She said that they were friends, and that he wanted his father to know that it was not his fault, that he was fine, and that he loved him...and then she was gone..."

My tissues were globs of mucus...my sobs were unrelenting...my heart was pounding...It was another testament of how thin and transparent the veil had been during this trip...

We hear all of the time "Why did they have to go through this?" or "Why did God not bend the winds and storms?" and I feel I have an answer...This was a lesson not for ANY of them...for their testimonies were sure and solid before these trials, in that they all went where the Lord told them to go, despite grave and harrowing circumstances...This lesson was for US...

Sister Elaine S. Dalton:

"A little over a year ago, my husband and I visited Nauvoo. As we walked through the Old Pioneer Cemetery searching for the grave of an ancestor, Zina Baker Huntington, I was touched by the peaceful solitude and spirit I felt. I walked through the trees and read the names on the gravestones, many of them children and families. I wept as my heart was turned to our forefathers, many of whom had joined the Church and come to Nauvoo. In my mind I asked many questions: Why did they leave their comfortable homes and families? Why did they suffer persecution, sickness, even death? Why did they sacrifice all that they had to come to this place and build a temple? They hardly had shelter, and yet they were building a temple! Why did they do it? And when the temple was nearly completed, how could they leave it behind? As I sat silently contemplating this scene, the answer came forcefully yet softly to my mind and heart: “We did this for you.”

Those words, “We did this for you,” reminded me that our ancestors, along with many other faithful Saints, sacrificed everything because of their testimonies and faith in Jesus Christ. They knew that the gospel had been restored to the earth once more and that they were led by a prophet of God. They knew that the Book of Mormon was true and understood its message and witness. They knew that through the restoration of priesthood keys, families could be sealed together for eternity through holy priesthood ordinances available only in a temple. They knew that temple work was the key to the salvation and exaltation of the human family. They knew the importance of this work, and they were willing to give all that they had in order to provide a house acceptable to the Lord wherein this holy work could be performed. They sacrificed everything so that past and future generations would have access to the eternal blessings of the temple."

They did this for our generation...They did this for all the young men who aren't sure about going on missions...They did this for people who question if it is worth waiting for a temple marriage...They did this as an example of the faith necessary to return to our Father in Heaven...

They did this, for ME...

STILL Together.....

We celebrated our
17th Wedding Anniversary yesterday...Where has the time gone? If we were to list all that has happened during that time, I'm sure that we could have several books published, as well as have a really good shot at winning the "Last Comic Standing!"

The great thing? I'm more in love with him now, than I ever thought possible!!

Here's to the next seventeen...

Wyoming

I am off to Wyoming early tomorrow morning...The Stake Presidency and YW and YM Presidencies are going on a pre-pre-pre-Trek visit (I say "pre" because we don't have trek until August of 2010!) I have never been to Martin's Cove, Sixth Crossing, and other sites...but I am planning on stopping by Costco to get an ample supply of toilet paper, for what I'm sure will be an emotional and very spiritual experience!

I am a direct descendant of George Q. Cannon...he was among those who traveled with Brigham Young...and when they reached the Salt Lake Valley, he was asked to keep going, and founded what we know as St. George...Can you imagine thinking "Wow, we finally got here!!" only to be told to continue on?! The amazing amount of faith and love our pioneers had!!

At first I was less than happy that I had to go...with school starting, my oldest in Jr. High, my youngest in Kindergarten, I felt very torn...But I had a session in the temple that told me in very unmistakable terms that I needed to go...(dang!! When the Lord lays it out for you, that you cannot deny something, you go!)

So I'm off at 6am (which might as well be 4am for me!!) in a 10 passenger van with my fellow Stake cohorts...it should be a very colorful, hilarious, spiritual, and overwhelming trip!

"Come, Come ye Saints...No toil nor labor fear... But with joy...wend your way..."

Old Times!

My DEAR friend Kim and I hooked up today...SO MUCH FUN!!! I really miss the talks we'd have on our front porches together...the callings we had together (the red koolaid in our hair, the sumo costumes we put on!)...the gossip we shared togeher?..So here we are....Admire the beauty! It was a lovely afternoon, even though our children were mad that we didn't make it to the pool!? I LOVE YOU, KIM!!

I'm Hoarse cuz I'm a ROCKSTAR!!

Today was my husband's birthday...We bought him "Rock Band" for the Wii...I finally know what I'm destined to be...A ROCKSTAR!! With a 97% on the expert level, I need to venture out with my "band" in tow...my sister laying into the drums, my brother-in-law wailing on the guitar, and my sexy rocker-chick-voice ala Ann Wilson from "Heart" booming through a sold-out show...

Get your lighters ready...

Oh--My dear friend Kim is visiting me tomorrow while she is on vacation here in the beehive state...I wonder if she will recognize me, in all my splendor and illustriousness...?

Tao Project

We had an AMAZING speaker at our Stake Youth Conference...His name is Brother Layne Pace, and he is an Apache Helicopter pilot for the US Army...He told us of his mission of setting up orphanages in the remote areas of Afghanistan, and the stories behind several of the children and families he has been able to help...After sharing his vision with the current Miss Utah, she made it her platform project...We are currently trying to set-up a Stake Youth Service Project where we will be collecting clothing and toys for these beautiful children he serves...It will bring tears to your eyes, and warm your hearts...

Christmas in July!

My mom has been fighting breast cancer for the past year...Nasty chem0, radiation, depression, three wigs, no eye-lashes...She has been amazing! We knew we would be getting together for the fourth, so my sister and I planned a surprise for her--Christmas in July--since this past Christmas she was so sick...

I should have pictures soon...but until then...picture this: We used quilting filler for snow on the front porch, put up all the trees and Christmas lights, paved the way with red wrapping paper, and had all the grand-kids sing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" as she walked up the stairs...It was AWESOME!! We ate Christmas-shaped-sugar-cookies, and gave her Christmas presents...It truly felt like Christmas (except when you stepped outside and it was 90 degrees!!)

Pictures coming soon!

Post Youth Conference Identity Crisis...

I decided I needed to change things up a little...Thanks to my marvelously talented niece, I now have long, lovely locks...I can't wait to freak people out at church on Sunday : )

Today is my first official "Ponytail Day!!!"

Words into Action

"Prepare the child for the path...Not the path for the child..."

Youth Conference is Thursday through Saturday...3 days to make sure they all receive a "life-changing experience"...or at least feel loved ; )
I have my pink and army green camo-themed t-shirts and capris all ready to go...A LOT of Excedrin, hideous "modesty clothes" in case the youth forget the dress code (he he he), coupled with a sincere love of these youth...

We are an "Army of One"....

Now drop and give me twenty!!

Thursday Aftermath...A Sequel...

Wednesday morning I found myself at 2am at my computer, writing this sister an email...I simply and unconfrontationally (impressive for me, I know!) let her know how I felt, especially from that night, and from other instances how I was feeling, as well as the thoughts and emotions that had been in my heart. I even was bold enough to tell her how I felt she was sometimes perceived by me ( and others ), and that I knew for assuredly, that one of my purposes was to bring those "unconventional" ideas to the table...

*Priceless* She had been just as tormented about what had transpired as I, and had been equally worried about how I was feeling...It was a completely different side to her...

It was also a completely different atmosphere later that evening at our meeting...

What stood out to me most from this situation, was not necessarily "you need to let others know how you are feeling," which is not a real problem for me, but the lesson to be true to yourself and who you are...I am the "black sheep," ultra- liberal-appearing, "unconventional," "outspoken," limb of the Stake YW Presidency...And I am okay with that, and I know that is why I was called to serve in this capacity. This experience simply (though stressfully!) reaffirmed my place, and validated my persona and how I think about things. Perhaps I needed to learn this, so I would be able to remain strong in my positions, regardless of the looks I get from others?!

Well...Youth Conference is next week, and it will be AMAZING!! (And I can be my strong, obnoxious, rowdy-self while I'm there!!!)

6/18/2008

Tuesday Aftermath

I'm in a real mood...A pissy one at that! I am so frustrated! I'm supposed to be 1st Counselor in my new calling, and nothing I do, say, offer, etc. is taken with a grain of salt. I worked REALLY hard on something for a meeting, that saved (I think) a lot of time--turning what could have been a 6-8 hour meeting, into a mere 3 1/2...Do I get thanks? No...I get "well...we just want to be really sure we are arranging this correctly.............." My poor husband had to listen to me at midnight, as I came home and vented! (What a trooper!) Not only that, but I feel that some of the leaders I work with try so hard to avoid certain groupings/situations, that they are inevitably doing the youth a disservice...going against one of my favorite creeds, "Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child..." type of thing.

I believe that some of the biggest and most important lessons learned come from those trials or obstacles that are hard or uncomfortable..Now, don't get me wrong...I'm not saying "yeah, just let the youth run amuck and figure things out on their own....", I'm just saying, I think we need to try and teach the youth how to handle certain situations that will help them in life...For, we all know that life is not fair, perfect, or easy...In planning our upcoming Youth Conference, this has been a big frustration for me.

I'm the oldest one in the Presidency, and although age doesn't necessarily mean wisdom, I feel that sometimes the "big picture" is missed...That in this day and age, the youth deserve leaders who are going to, tactfully and correctly, "tell it like it is," and not give all the textbook or "primary" answers, especially because a lot of the youth are a lot wiser than their years upon this earth!!

I may be "flighty" and unconventional, but that does not mean I don't have a testimony or a view that perhaps might be worthy of applying to the world?...I feel unappreciated, and patronized...Two things that make my type A personality cringe...

Okay...I'm done...

I'm going to go drink my "illegal" drink, and take two Excedrin....

Random Thoughts on Father's Day

The picture is in tribute to my husband...Who loves being a father only slightly more than being on the golf course!!

-I let my husband begin his Father's Day celebration by taking the older kids to church...alone! I elected to stay home with our sick 5 year old...So I think he ended up with the better deal!

-We went and saw "Iron Man" yesterday as a family. It was okay, although I really liked Robert Downey Jr. in his character...it was a good fit!

-We got our date for Girls Camp next year (which I am "supposedly" in charge of...) I dry-heaved as I read the email...

-I still love Lisa, even though we both think the other's candidate is, shall I say, "not to our liking?
(love ya, girl!)

-I found the best recipe for homemade, white bread...here is is:
1 and 1/2 cups warm water
1 tablespoon yeast
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
Mix the above ingredients together in a mixer with the kneading attachment. Add the following, in two cup increments, to the liquid mix above, until the dough is soft and elastic (about 2 minutes). Put in oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 60 minutes. Grease 2 bread pans with Crisco. Turn dough over on floured surface. Divide in half. Roll dough into loaf shapes, and place in pans. Let rise for about 30 minutes, and bake in preheated oven at 350, for 25 minutes until golden.

-We are making scones for lunch, with the above recipe (yum!)

-My daughter bought a Holland Lop bunny with her own money, and I must say, it is one of the CUTEST things I have ever seen!!

-I finished reading "Pillars of the Earth," and it was a really good story...It's over 900 pages, and yet, it didn't seem that long!

-Using my final paycheck from the magazine, I bought a cool wall mural to hang in our family room....I'll post pictures in a few weeks!

-My mom has finished radiation, has the cutest short, choppy hair growing in, and only has chemo (a kind with minimal side effects) once a week for the next 9 months...I am so amazed by her!!

-My husband is wonderful...I don't know what I'd do without him!!

Let It Begin

Yup...I'm supporting Obama...I hope you all find a candidate that you can be passionate about, as well...

So...me and my Obama-lovin booty are off to go visit one of MANY ward Girls Camps this month...in the rain...in the cold...wondering if they'll be serving "pop-tarts" for dinner, because there's no way anyone is getting a fire going anytime soon!

Obama and Girls Camps...Let it begin!!

No Longer a Woman

Today I handed in my July/August article...Summer Sandals....I did the photo shoot, and the entire layout...It looks really good...

This will be my last article for Wasatch Woman magazine...

I had one of those defining moments a couple of weeks ago. As I met with the editor, it was for the first time awkward....which it has NEVER been...The article topic had been changed, and some other surprise elements came into play...I did not think much of it at the time, but in hind-sight, I now see the subtlety...

The following Sunday, I got a bad case of strep, which allowed me to be home from church, with no husband or children around...It was in the quietude that I was able to ponder a little bit about my life, and everything that had happened, is happening, and will happen. When my family came home from church, my husband casually made the comment, "Things happen for a reason." I don't know why it struck me as it did, but I knew at that moment that it was time for me to move on from the magazine...There was no reason...Just the warmth of the peace I felt through my whole being.

I had the editor and publisher in tears, and I agreed I would love to finish with this article for them, in my own way, on my favorite subject...SHOES!

It has been an amazing journey, and I never would of thought I would be a magazine contributor, being able to talk about one of my favorite things...Fashion!

The picture above is a sneak peak to my article.....I love a good teaser!

A Stop Sign for Time

Every other night, my son and I go running....It has been amazing! He is turning 12 on the 21st...I cannot believe how the time has flown, or where it has gone?! My easiest baby, my laid-back child, my tender hearted boy, my son with the wise eyes...I cannot believe the boy who is running next to me, talking with me, laughing and joking with me, will be on a mission in seven years...I wish time would stop running so fast, so that I could run with my son like this, a little longer...

A Night with Obama

Thursday finally arrived...It was book club! Six of my favorite people get together every other month and discuss a book, eat delicious food, and enjoy fantastic conversation. It was no exception last night...We had heated/but kind dialog about the book, politics, candidates, and policies...SO INVIGORATING!! I love that everyone comes from a different view-point, and was articulate and passionate about their stance. I love even more that no one goes away with hurt feelings, because we are THAT comfortable with each other, and can be ourselves with each other.

I feel like this election is a critical...eventful...rebirth or possible catalyst, which may determine so many important things...(sorry so vague!) But I have been curiously drawn into this arena, and I am enjoying the allure I have felt to find out all that I can, about as much as I can. I think things need to change, and I am certainly going to make sure I am going to support and uphold those things in my mind that I feel are worthy and represent my feelings about the world in which I/we live...and I think it can, and needs, to be better and more indicative of the kind of nation we profess to be.

And I love that I can share with my friends at book club...and the five of you who faithfully read my blog...and know that you will still call me friend, when all is said and done.

Out of my league...

A fish on dry land...The black sheep...I feel so under-qualified and miscast that it is giving me huge anxiety! I feel so overwhelmed with my new calling, and wonder how I ever got cast into this arena. Why did the Lord chose me? How am I to be an example to those I've been called to serve? As I was sitting at a meeting tonight, I was suddenly struck with how obvious it was that I am a different kind of folk. While others speak of making Stake dances more "spiritual" in nature, I sit and think how much fun it would be to get out and dance with them! I got chastised for bringing my caffeinated beverage to a church activity! I am never dressed appropriately...meaning...I always get my meetings confused, and end up showing up in jeans and a top, when I should be in a dress, and vice versa! I am more comfortable with the young women, then the leaders I work with! WHAT have I gotten myself into?! I feel like someone is pointing a finger at me, and I am sitting here, looking behind me to see who they are pointing to!
I am beyond wanting to hear about being in the right place, when at the moment, I'm trying to think of how I can suddenly be pregnant or comatose for the next three years!! Right now, I feel like I am the poster child for weaknesses, without the attached "becoming strengths..."
I do have a testimony. I love the gospel. I know how blessed I am....Perhaps that is why I feel so out of my league...Because I know what is expected, and I just don't know if I can deliver it.

Fang, a Trip to Timp, and Pennywise

I don't know why...but yesterday morning I checked the KSL.com classifides...After over a year of trying to get one, I am proud to say, we are the owner of a new Wii system...

We needed to meet our "dealer" to make the exchange. You know the commercials, where the two immaculately groomed Asian guys appear on your doorstep, handing you the controls? Well, picture their long, lost brother...Shifty, anxious, nervous, agitated, no bowing, no eye contact and my husband, totally spiffed up (we were on our way to the temple!) with a wad of cash...Any law enforcement would have to assume that something was "going down."

After we got our prize from Fang (yes...his real name), we headed up to do our session at the temple. We were discussing the logic of "because we were going to the temple, we were being blessed...la la la" We decided that we wanted to use the Wii as a tool for spiritual growth... well...let's be honest...and our personal amusement!

We decided that we would do the classic "door-bell ditch." We were coming up with what we could write on the note. Here were the top contenders:

The Good:
"Blessings come from going to the temple...Keep up the good work! From-the Three Nephites"

The Better:
"Thanks for letting your parents attend the temple...From-Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego"
(characters from one of our kids favorite Veggie Tales)

The Best:
"I've been watching the good things you do...Thanks for letting your parents go to the temple...Remember...I'll be watching! From-Pennywise (From the tv movie "It," and the reason why my kids fear clowns...especially those that hide in caves with spiders)

Since we didn't want them bearing their testimonies in church about how the "three Nephites brought them a Wii since their parents went to the temple...," the Shad, Mesh and Abe story just wasn't satisfying enough,...and although it would of been hilarious to watch their reactions, the Pennywise angle would of not been funny at all when all three kids are sleeping in your bed for the next week!

So...we went with the plan, and the safe..."Blessings come when you go to the temple"

We rang the doorbell...
Hid on the side of the house...
Heard the "OH MY GOSH!!!!!" "AAAAHHHHH!!!" "A Wii!!!" and my favorite, "This has Mom written all over it!"

A very satisfying evening for all.

The "other" white meat, offers no salvation

My husband and son went to the Priesthood session of General Conference tonight. I took the other kids to Rumbi grill, with a promise that we would end the evening with an ice-cream cone from McDonalds, or, as called in our home, "Old-Mac-Donalds..."

We arrived home with full tummies, smiles, and only two impulse purchases from Walmart in tow...A delightful evening.

Later, I asked the boys how the session went...Who was there...Who spoke...It was when I asked what subjects they tackled that my son immediately said, "We are suppose to avoid violence, swearing, and PORKANOGRAPHY..."

Damn that white meat!!

They make it look so good...and when you add the applesauce?!

After a good laugh, I said, "Well...if you ever mess with pornography, you'll end up in something even worse...a**kickingography!"

Then my dear son tried to make me feel better by saying that it is okay for me to say a**, because it "just is another name for a donkey..."

Donkeys, pigs...nothing is safe!!

Wonderful

If you were not able to attend/watch the General Young Womens Conference....PLEASE take the time to listen to it...It is simply WONDERFUL! The Young Women Presidency were inspiring and fun to listen to, and dear President Eyring...I wept at his eloquent and beautiful words addressed to the young women of the church.

You'll be sorry if you don't...Click here to listen

The Many Facets of Butter

I just got back from my first MASSAGE from my membership...I feel like a soft cube of melted butter, all smooth and creamy...

Tonight I have one of four meetings this week for the Stake. We are really down to the wire in planning Youth Conference, and the heat is on! (I feel like crackling, sizzling butter in this case) These meetings tend to last until at least 11-12 at night...Good times, good times!!

I have my meetings, my article for the magazine to write (take a deep breath ladies--it's on SWIM WEAR!!), General Young Womens Conference (we got tickets for our Stake to go see this at the Conference Center!! YEAH!!), a new charter school meeting, a talk to prepare for Sunday, about 20 million loads of laundry, one sick child, one golfing "MIA" husband, and my daughter's b-day to plan...leaving me feeling like "burned butter" at the thought of all this!

BUT(ter!)....I got my new rug in my library (thanks hubby--this must of been some sort of pay-off for all the golfing being done?) which puts a smile on my face...

So...the world keeps "chur-ning," and you never know where you'll be "spread..."

(Can you tell I haven't had lunch yet?)

Staying on Budget...

Since paying off all our debt, I've been trying really hard to stay on a budget...and it's been going okay...Until I saw this...I want it...I NEED it to be in my library...

Do you know how many times I have had it in the shopping cart to check out? Do you ever do that? Just load up your shopping cart like you have all the money in the world? Then, when the "high" wears off, (or you see the total at the bottom) you simply delete...no harm done?!

The sad thing is, the price is really good...So I have the inner battle of "you are saving SO MUCH MONEY/You are getting a GREAT deal" verses "Wait...If you are meant to have it, it will be there in 2 weeks..." I'm having everyone over for Easter Lunch that Sunday...so I WANT to have it by then...All pretty and perfect...

So I continue to "pretend shop," over and over, and see if my luck will hold out! (I hate being on budget...)

Talents

When I was a freshman in High school, it was required that everyone took Keyboarding, also known as, Type. The class room had a constant sound of fingers hitting keys in a rhythmic montage...where...for and hour and twenty minutes, this constant sound was repeated, again, and again...

It wasn't until I was in college, that I realized not everyone could type--I mean, REALLY type. I can type without looking at the keys, and rarely do I make an overt number of mistakes, and can do it in a very limited amount of time. While we were in school, I would painstakingly watch as my husband would start to type up a paper...tap...tap...tap...when I would suddenly find myself typing his paper for him instead of listening to that depressing sound. Any colleagues of mine at work were amazed how I would type up agendas, reports and what-nots so swiftly...At our recent Stake Talent Show? Yes...It was I who typed up the entire script for the youth who had parts in the program...word...for...word...

I wonder if it will ever be passe to know how to type--Will typing, emailing and text messaging give way to voice only? Is it only a matter of time before this subtle talent of mine will be made into jokes and "I remember when's...?"

Timeless talents...Are there any?!

Feelin'...

I feel overwhelmed....The kind where you feel like you are in a dazed, immovable state, where you know you need to "get to it," but have so much to "get to," you don't know where to start.

As excited as I am for my Stake calling, it is truly like a full-time job... I feel that I am in meetings more each day than I am with my kids each day! I came home at 11pm from ONE of my weekly meetings...and that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Along with this new "job," I still profess to be a Magazine Contibutor (which means my "part-time" job), financial planner, chemo entertainer and supporter (each week it takes 5-6 hours total time to complete), taxi-cab driver, my current ward calling as 2nd Counselor in YW (yup--no release yet!), spouse (I have forgotten what my husband looks like--has anyone seen him? because I sure haven't!!), and SAHM, which basically encompasses everything else!! Along with this--I GOTTA have some "me" time...is that selfish? Am I allowed? I still haven't used any of my b-day massages, and I feel as though I run approximately five 10k's each day--but that is without the benefit of the serenity of my nano playing in my ear, as I run and meditate!!

But what I'm really worried about?

How will all of this affect my ability to see "The Office" each week?!

(Got to have SOME humor about all of this!)

Deer in the headlights

So...1st counselor in the Stake Young Women Presidency...Called at 7:30am...Sustained at 9:00am...A morning of explaining to fellow ward members that I REALLY did not know until 7:30am that morning of my calling...Calling my YW president, who also did not know of my calling until that moment when I called her...Coming home to a phone message from my sister (who is in my Stake) saying, "Soooo....Is there something you want to tell me?!"...Going to my first Stake Youth Council and getting right into planning the upcoming Talent Show happening in two weeks...looking at a calendar that had all these meetings with all these acronyms that I did not understand...Youth Conference and 300 youth...Counting my blessings that Girls camp was at a ward level this year...Having the Stake Presidency look at me and say, "So, are you the one speaking in the Ward Conference, next week?"...Did I mention meetings?...

Yup...that is me...Deer in the headlights...!

2/09/2008

So...

What do you do when you are called to meet with the Stake President in the morning?...at 7:30AM...Any suggestions or words of advice?...

Does the Shoe Fit?

After a long night, finishing two articles for the magazine, I heard a knock at my front door...

My friend had brought me a gift...

So appropriate! (Yes--it's a chair!!)

Passing of Gordon B. Hinckley

I will greatly miss this miraculous man...I have shook his hand...Felt his love for us...Seen his spirit reflected in so many ways...Caught his humor and love of life by not mincing his words...I will miss the comfort I felt, just from knowing he was there...But I am joyful that he can be reunited with his sweet wife, as well as friends and family, and that he will continue the work beyond our earthly sight...

...and I am happy that such a great man will be there to teach, and convert, Heath Ledger!!

It's the Name of the Game

So I took this name-quiz...

The results were dead-on...

Too bad that I used "Yolanda," and not my REAL name (which when I did, was a COMPLETE non-match!)

What Yolanda Means

You are a free spirit, and you resent anyone who tries to fence you in.
You are unpredictable, adventurous, and always a little surprising.
You may miss out by not settling down, but you're too busy having fun to care.

You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life.
You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you.
At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.
You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.
You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You are balanced, orderly, and organized. You like your ducks in a row.
You are powerful and competent, especially in the workplace.
People can see you as stubborn and headstrong. You definitely have a dominant personality.

All Pumped Up!

After SIX MONTHS of logging, and logging, and logging, each and every blood test, as well as each and every unit of insulin I injected into my body, my insurance company FINALLY approved me to get an insulin pump...(Do NOT read the following if you are the faint at heart...)

It "only" cost me $3849.00...Nope...It's not a typo...I actually paid more than my insurance company did...NOW do you see why I want to take on the insurance companies? (see below post) Instead of handing you a glucometer, a couple vials of insulin, some shots, and a "good luck with that," EVERYONE newly diagnosed should receive one of these babies...It is truly THAT life altering!

Aside from the irritating insurance fiasco, I am really excited, and "PUMPED" to finally be "hooked" up.

If anything...I just look like I am someone important...sporting a special pager/phone!

Tagged by Kim...For Kim!

I was tagged by my friend, Kim...

10 years ago:
I was a Retail Fashion Manager, working far too many hours, had one 19 month old boy, and was expecting my daughter in 3 months...

5 things on my to-do list today:
1. Be up and dressed, looking like a "fashion contributor," by 7am (that is BIG for me!)
2. Direct a photo-shoot for the magazine at a new salon I found, which is being featured in our
March /April magazine issue.
3. Go grocery shopping--we have no milk, which is not good when you have three kids who live on cereal...
4. Make a charm-bracelet for one of my young women, whose birthday is today.
5. Make sure my son has everything he will need for his "Klondike overnight" on friday...I'm glad he's excited, because I sure wouldn't be!

I enjoy:
SHOES, a new haircut, book club, a diet vanilla coke from Sonic, a quiet run when it is lightly snowing in the evening, a good nap, & talking with friends...

What would I do if I were suddenly made a billionaire:
Take on all the industries who make money off of people's suffering--insurance companies, medical supply companies, drug companies...etc. (All from the quietude of my own, private island...)

3 of my bad habits:
1. Swearing...
2. Being TOO honest, at times!
3. Target, Old Navy, DSW Shoes...

5 places I have lived:
1. Spokane, WA
2. Littleton, CO
3. Farmington, UT
4. San Jose, CA
5. Cairo, EGYPT (been there...in my dreams!)

5 jobs that I have had:
1. Zoo keeper
2. Lagoon Rides Division/Water park Coordinator
3. Museum Docent at BYU
4. Sears Fashions Manager
5. Fashion/Style contributor for "Wasatch Woman" magazine.

5 Things people don't know about me:
1. I have a tattoo
2. I am ALWAYS right!
3. I HATE being misunderstood.
4. I never take the first cup out of a dispenser for drinks...I think the next one is going to be "cleaner?" or touched less?
5. I never quite got over a certain "love" in my life...Do dreams translate into wishes?!

I now tag: Melissa, Amy, Lammy, Carrie, and Smee

Tragic Loss

Such talent...such potential...such a beautiful face...such a tragedy...

January 21st

I had seen this film years ago...and this past weekend we shared it with our older children...They were astonished that things like this actually happened... I pray we all keep our children aware and open...that they know the single power we all have within ourselves...so that the same thing does not happen again...

RIP

Have you heard?! I felt like I had been punched in the stomach when the lady at Smiths told me that Kraft had decided to no longer make the iconic drink of my childhood...my "mormon-capuchino-latte-esque" beverage...A tradition that my daughter SCREAMED (glass breaking) at when I came home and told her I was unable to procure the "secret ingredient" to our hot-chocolate fixes...

RIP Postume...RIP...

(You think I'm crazy?! Just go on eBay and see how much these bottles are going for...!!)
